Squad Iain Wilson, Stephen Woods, Rick Elliott, Gaz Winter, Liam Calland

This was a totally different MLS side to the one Munchers comfortably defeated 10-4 three months earlier – in fact it was more like the Serbian Salmon side who were by now two leagues ahead of Munchers. The difference in class was evident throughout, and but for several outrageous showboating attempts by MLS, who knows what the score might have been. Having said that, Munchers never gave up, and with a little luck themselves in front of goal, they could easily have doubled their tally.

MLS strolled into a 3-0 lead before Stephen Woods blasted an opening goal for Munchers. 1-3 quickly became 1-5 before Gaz Winter scored, and at half time the score was 2-6.

For some reason, the teams didn’t switch ends at half time, but the second half began in identical fashion, as the opening three goals went to MLS despite some brave goalkeeping by Iain Wilson. Munchers never-say-die spirit showed as from 2-9 down, goals from Rick Elliott, Gaz Winter, Liam Calland and Gaz Winter again reduced the deficit to three goals, but in the closing few minutes a further three MLS goals gave the final score line a truer reflection of the relative abilities of the sides.

Hawkings 6 Own Goals and Gaffes 4

Stephen Hawkings Football Boots (5)6 [Stephen Woods 4, Chris Elliott 2] Own Goals and Gaffes (2)4

Squad – Iain Wilson, Chris Elliott, Richard Elliott, Andrew Dignan, Stephen Woods

Hawkings’ began slowly, and had to come from behind at 1-0 and 2-1, with Stephen Woods netting the equaliser on each occasion. Towards the end of the half, Hawkings gained the upper hand, and two Chris Elliott goals and a third from Woods gave Hawkings a 5-2 interval lead. There had been little between the teams, and the Own Goals ‘keeper was responsible for at least two of the goals.

Own Goals came out strongly in the second half, and Iain Wilson was kept busy in goals. He couldn’t keep everything out, though, as Own Goals added another two strikes, with another Woods effort – helped again by the ‘keeper – maintaining Hawkings’ advantage. Some more fine Wilson stops towards the end as Hawkings tired ensured that the recent losing run came to an end.

Man of the match Iain Wilson

Hawkings 1 Walton Wanderers 13

Stephen Hawkings Football Boots (1)1 [Stephen Woods] Walton Wanderers (5)13

Squad –Iain Wilson, Richard Elliott, Andrew Dignon, Frances Dignon, Stephen Woods

Even with a weakened side, this was an embarrassing performance by Hawkings. They competed well early on, with Stephen Woods having a storming game, and after he scored to make the score 1-3, for a few minutes Hawkings looked the more likely scorers. However, when Rick Elliott injured himself in the second half and had to take over in goal for a while from Iain Wilson, it all started to go wrong. Iain went back in goal for the closing minutes, but was left totally exposed four times in the last couple of minutes and Walton scored with ease each time to give them a resounding victory.
